By the time that Ben arrived that afternoon, Anna was almost sick with worry. Talking to Beth had made her feel worse than ever. It seemed that speaking her fears aloud made them all the more likely.
For the first time since they started going out together, Ben came without Lilly. Not having the little girl along made Anna feel ever more uncertain. Climbing up on the buggy seat beside Ben, she wondered if this was a sign that he was ready to end their developing relationship.
“Lilly is staying with one of the neighbor girls,” Ben explained as Anna settled down at his side, “I thought we could use some time to talk together.”
Anna nodded slowly, suddenly feeling sick at her stomach.
As they started out the driveway and onto the country road, conversation seemed to come slowly. Ben took Anna into town where they picked up a hamburger at the local diner. Although it was obvious that Ben had wanted to spend time alone with Anna, he said nothing out of the ordinary; instead, he slowly began to drift into familiar topics such as things that Lilly had done that day and a funny story about one of his new calves. While Anna breathed an internal sigh of relief that he wasn’t heading into unpleasant territory, the fact that he wanted to discuss something private with her put her on pins and needles.

If something was to happen to me, she would be totally by herself. I know that you’re not keen on getting married after…whatever happened in your past, but I also know that you need a place of your own.”
Anna looked down at her hands and began rubbing them together. She thought she knew what Ben was getting at, but she wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear it – not this way.
“There aren’t very many women my age who aren’t already married or at least seeing someone,” Ben announced, “And I don’t have any faith in younger girls to take gut care of Lilly. I trust you, Anna. Would you consider marrying me?”
Anna swallowed the lump that was forming in her throat. All her hopes of ever finding romance with Ben Eicher seemed to suddenly fall apart. He didn’t love her – she was just the solution to a problem.
Slowly, Anna nodded her head, “I guess it’s something to think about. How soon do you need my answer?”
Ben gave a shrug as he looked out across the fields, “I dunno…would a
